It can help reduce stress

We all experience emotional problems and regulate them in different ways. Every individual is unique in how they cope with the feelings of stress. The stress response is a way the body protects itself to escape the danger by stimulating the sympathetic nervous system. This is expressed via tense muscles, short breaths, lack of energy and inability to be fully present in the body. The aim of the massage when working with clients with problems associated with stress is to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for maintenance, growth and repair of the functioning of the body.

Remembering our bodies

Empower & Heal

I believe that part of our sense of disembodiment comes from forgetting that we are the bodies. All our emotions, thoughts and feelings are reflected in our cells and tissues. Many people tend to disassociate from their bodies when they experience discomfort or when they do not like some body parts. Massage in this regard may help us ‘remember’ the body, feel it, include it and be it. Thus remembrance of the body that is facilitated by a caring and mindful touch enables a person’s attention to be more spontaneously directed to those body parts that have been abandoned or pushed out of one’s awareness. Integration is a process that involves re-owning, remembering, reconnecting with our true nature via physical sensations.

Holistic massage can lead to a variety of outcomes

  • Improving physical symptoms, for instance, releasing tight muscles, stimulating blood circulation, improving sensory nerve functioning and enhancing joint mobility. It can also alleviate short and long term problems associated with back pain, arthritic conditions as well as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and some autoimmune diseases.

  • Emotionally holistic massage can enable clients to receive non-intrusive touch that they often long for, which can then lead to a reduction in stress levels and an increase in self-esteem.

  • At a more profound level, massage can facilitate the release of past traumas held in the body tissues; this can bring about a significant shift in our energy and render an essential basis for the personal process of growth.
